Then you can build on that.Welcome to Universalis! What is the Liturgy of the Hours? Find out here. Use what you like best as you get the hang of the Liturgy of the Hours. My advice is don't stress about it too much at first. If you're going to be praying in community at times, you may want something that uses the same translation that's approved for use where you are so you'll have the same exact words as everyone else. on a particular memorial one might legitimately use the reading from the commons or from the weekday at evening prayer). You're doing it out of devotion, you're trying to pray with the universal church, and even within the breviary itself there are options such that we're not always all praying exactly the same thing (e.g. Of course, unless you're bound to pray the office, whatever app you use to pray the Liturgy of the Hours is probably going to be basically OK. That feature about telling you where to put your ribbon sounds like it would be helpful for a beginner - for many people, just figuring out what page you're praying from is the hardest part, and while apps eliminate that problem, it doesn't teach a person what to do in a printed breviary or things like what a proper or common is. However, those look like US breviaries they're selling in the sidebar, so I'm guessing that's the translation they're using. I had not seen the DivineOffice site before - looks nice, but it seems not to be open to new registrations, so I can't make a comparison. Laudate seems to draw from Universalis, which uses a different English translation, which I assume is used elsewhere. On the rare occasions I use an app for praying the office, iBreviary is my go-to because it's free and pretty reliable and uses the translation used in the United States, where I live, and I never really had need to look any further. One thing you run into is different translations. I think iBreviary is really best used by people who know how to use a breviary, but just don't happen to have it with them when they need one. For example, whereas Universalis and DivineOffice will give me the option of selecting, for example, the midday prayer, iBreviary makes me select "Daytime Prayer" and then within that, Midmorning, Midday, and Midafternoon are all there together, and then it starts talking about complementary psalmody. I agree that iBreviary seems to have a lot there, but I just can't get the grasp of it. I don't know the differences between the translations, but since I'm only praying the hours by myself, I'm not overly concerned with translations at this point. ![]() The hymns are different, but the psalms seem to be similar/same. The DivineOffice iOS app seems to be somewhat similar to Universalis in that it presents the exact texts you need to pray, but with fewer bells and whistles. I've downloaded all and am trying to figure out which one works best for me and my uses. Thank you so much! That is an amazing rundown.
